Sex Drive

Anthony Duva Aug 7, 2008

Directed by Sean Anders, with a screenplay with Sean Anders and John Morris with Josh Zuckerman , Clark Duke, Amanda Crew, James Marsden and Seth Green.

Sex Drive is a teen age sex comedy picking up where Porky’s in the 80’s and America Pie in the 90’s left off. Basically it is about a virgin who wants to get laid.

The plot is simple: Eighteen-year-old Ian Lafferty sets out on a cross country drive with his best friends Lance and Felicia in order to lose his virginity to a red-hot babe he met on the Internet. The catch is he needs to drive from his home in Chicago to his hot babe who is in Knoxville, Tenn. But the journey, filled with hilarious misadventures and raunchy escapades, teaches all three more than they expected about life and love. Stop me if you have seen this movie before.

What separates this movie from the rest of its genre are two things. The performance of Seth Green as an Amish farmer who helps Ian and his friends after their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and the character of Felicia.

Simply put Seth Green steals this movie! His scenes are crisp and sharp and his underplayed performance filled with irony is completely hilarious and the character of Felicia as Ian’s longtime best friend, played by Amanda Crew, actually has depth. Even though we realize way before the movie does that Ian and Felicia are meant for each other Amanda Crew manages to convince us that she is a real teenager, with real emotions and real feelings.

The rest of the movie is a rehash and remake of everything you may or may not have seen before. Porky’s. Meatballs, American Pie all went down this road before and the bits and pieces are reassembled but recognizable. I suppose if I were 16 and had not seen any of the above I would find this all terribly original but I am not 16 and have seen all of the above so I laughed out loud only at Seth Green’s character and enjoyed somewhat voyeuristically the obligatory and anticipated T & A scenes which thankfully the movie did give us.

Other than that I liked the 68 GTO, nicknamed ‘The Judge’ which Ian manages to steal from his older brother to drive on his odyssey of hormones and if truth be told I found Clark Duke as the best friend also somewhat refreshing.
